This is my favourite film by Maya Deren. film score by johnny greenwood . Maya Deren , written directed and starred by Maya Deren herself. It reminded me of the log scene I filmed on the beach. I love the way she combines two worlds,
the transition between different worlds. One foot still on driftwood o the beach for example , while her head is over looking a boardroom table. I also like the transition between live action and stop animation. ( the chess set ) Could possibly try that in future.
At Land , made in 1944, is a 15 minute silent experimental film. It has a d r e a m l i k e narrative in which a women (Deren ) is washed up on shore , and begins a strange journey , encountering people and other versions of herself.
Deren said the " the film is about the struggle to maintain one's personal identity"
Johnny Greenwood and Deren collaborated in the film, Greenwood creating the soundtrack. create the soundtrack

Meshes of the Afternoon (1943) is a short experimental film directed by wife and husband team, Maya Deren and Alexander Hammid. The film's narrative is circular, and repeats a number of psychologically symbolic images, including a flower on a long driveway, a key falling, a door unlocked, a knife in a loaf of bread, a mysterious Grim Reaper--like cloaked figure with a mirror for a face, a phone off the hook and an ocean. Through creative editing, distinct camera angles, and slow motion, the surrealist film depicts a world in which it is more and more difficult to catch reality.
"Deren's Meshes of the Afternoon (1943) uses a repetitive, loosely narrative structure and Freudian symbolism to examine female subjectivity in cinema." (Erin Foster)
