new plymouth

we played in New Plymouth and on the way back stayed on the top of a cliff of the wai iti beach in an old castle built by  Chapman Taylor in the 1920s  . The place was incredible , with all its interior furniture and furnishings built by hand . A garden courtyard inside the building itself. I couldn't drink all tour because of my health, so as the others sat around the fire drinking wine, I filmed corners of the carpet. filming the shadow of the walls . Going into empty rooms that had an air of someone there.

while this was going on , I was also trying  painting with oils and bottles of meths  onto big hardboard board I gessoed and bought along in the hope there would be time to paint.
They aren't finished and I'm too embarrassed to show them at this stage, but there are four of them. A half meter tall. washes of layers of oils. I liked the process of not being in control for once, so unlike my video work . I had to let go and let the paint for a large part, do its own thing.  Had they worked out or I had been able to finish them , they would have worked alon gnicel with the videos.
I am going to work on them over the summer and perhaps keep going with them in my work next year
