I adore Gregory Crewdson photos.
His photos he says are always physiological .
Despite people reading into his dark images of middle american suburbia as a social commentary, they are not.
The pictures are a projection of his own physiological fears and anxieties ( something I can well relate to)
Narrative plays a big role in his work , but in a different way to film or literature . His photographs frozen tin time are always unresolved
always ending on an open question.
"My pictures are involved in a time. Before and after "
As a photographer, he is never interested in resolving what is about to or has happened.
Crewdson is inspired by other american artist who "explore the intersection between the everyday life and the theatrical" ARtist such as CIndy Sherman, Edward Hopper, David Lynch, Hitchcock among the few are other artist who influence his work. Artist who have " reinvented the american landscape to tell a particular story"
I like Crewdson method of working.
before he knows what type of image he wants to create, he'll drive to a location, aimlessly over and over , for months and from there the story will organically grow , and become a production with a team of a hundred behind , an art director and set designer
the interior shots, ( created on a sound stage on set) are far more overtly physiological and intense than those of the exterior scenes.
All his work has such am incredble air of both beauty and sadness. A relationship between stillness and cinema. 'artifice and nature'
